Aztalan is the site of an ancient Mississippian culture settlement in Wisconsin that flourished from 900 to 1300AD. The indigenous people constructed massive earthwork mounds for religious and political purposes. They were part of a widespread culture with important settlements throughout the Mississippi River valley and its tributaries. Sometime between 1200 and 1300, the Aztalan settlement was abandoned. I really loved visiting this sacred site. It had a very peaceful and healing feeling. As you ascend the stairs, you can feel the ceremonies that have occurred there through all time. Located right along the Crawfish River, with the birds and local fauna I can see why they chose that site.
